The Motu Foundation's Purposes and GoalsBecause Motu Economic and Public Policy Research is a charitable trust, it relies on external funding to carry out its research.
Funding usually comes from a range of organisations, including government departments. These organisations usually seek answers to specific questions that are often narrow in scope and that deal with issues considered high priority by the current government.
The Motu Foundation aims to create an environment in which a greater number of longer-term, socially beneficial projects are undertaken. We would like to see important questions - such as "what are the long-term impacts of crime on offenders and victims?" or "how can New Zealand's water be allocated fairly and efficiently between competing users?" and "what are the effects of New Zealand immigration policy on New Zealanders and new immigrations?" - addressed more fully than current funding allows.
A lack of stable funding means it is difficult for New Zealand institutes to attract and retain top researchers. We are aiming to make New Zealand a more attractive location for top researchers, including expatriate New Zealanders, to work.
We also aim to ensure that the benefits of research undertaken in New Zealand reach a wide audience. The Motu Research and Education Foundation exists to provide stable, independently-governed funding towards these goals.
