Motu Economic and Public Policy Research

Patron Programme

The Motu Research and Education Foundation administers a patron programme that was first established by Motu Economic and Public Policy Research in 2004.

Our patrons provide financial support for a period of three years. Their generous contributions can be used to:

  • contribute to informed debate on important issues shaping New Zealand by underwriting Motu's Public Policy Seminar Series
  • produce and distribute summaries of key policy-relevant working papers
  • organise visits by top international visitors whose unique, outside perspectives facilitate discussion on significant policy issues within New Zealand
  • sponsor scholarships and internships, including a Maori scholarship and the Motu Doctoral Scholarship
  • provide seed grants for new areas of research
  • create funding pools to support specific programmes of research

We acknowledge Motu Patrons on our website, and in our annual reports and newsletters. Patrons also receive copies of our publications and invitations to Motu events and seminars.

Like those from donors, contributions from patrons protect the independence of Motu Economic and Public Policy Research. Patrons do not determine the direction or outcome of any of Motu’s research. The Motu Foundation is governed as an independent trust to maintain this division, which is essential for Motu’s credibility.

The overall aim of the Motu Foundation is to improve the capacity for and stability of public policy research in New Zealand and to complement other funding. This is set out in more detail on the purposes and goals page in this website.
